The high stakes court battle between Liverpool and New Balance over their kit deal ended on an unexpected note yesterday.

In essence the fame of basketball icon LeBron James, tennis legend Serena Williams and rap superstar Drake meant Liverpool’s players will turn out with the swoosh of Nike on their kits next season.

New Balance, who has the rights to produce Liverpool’s playing kit until May next year, tried to force Liverpool to activate a renewal clause in the contract which gave them the right to match any offer from a competitor.

Liverpool said New Balance had no chance of matching the Nike offer.

The dispute was settled in Liverpool’s favour at the High Court in London, after a bruising three day trial.
