My husband Carlos and I used to run. I suffered from a hip and knee injury that quickly led to me not running. In a search for another way to stay fit we bought our first set of mountain bikes in the summer of 2009. We had no intentions of even riding the dirt so we rode paved trails for about a month until we realized there were dirt trails close by. The learning curve was great and I had MANY MANY falls which lead to MANY MANY bumps and bruises. Those first set of mountain bikes were the beginning of this amazing journey. After having the bikes for only three months, Solavaca Ranch owner, Mack Hargrave convinced us to enter our first race. We were skeptical because of our lack of experience, but then again, life’s too short so what did we have to lose? This is what started it all, from V-Brakes to Disk Brakes, from Hardtails to Full-Suspension, from Aluminum to Carbon, from 26 inch wheels to 29, from baggies to spandex, from knee pads to skin suit, from Cat 3 to Cat 1, from Cat 1 to Pro…ok, you get the picture! We are part of an amazing and supportive team, Plano Athletic Cycling Club or “PACC,” whom has helped us to grow as racers and riders. But most important without our faith in God and the constant guidance and support of my amazing husband and coach, I never in a million years would have pictured myself living our lives the way that we do now. I can truly say that cycling has changed our lives forever! What started as a hobby has become a lifestyle.
In my first full season of racing in the Fall of 2010 I won the Overall for Cat 3 (19-29) and in the same season moved up to Cat 2 (19-29) where I won my first two races! The next year, 2011, in the Spring I won my first Cat 2 race of the season and my time would have even won Cat 1! I moved up to Cat 1 after only racing those three races in Cat 2 and placed 2nd Overall in the Texas Mountain Bike State Championship Series in Cat 1 (19-39). In the Fall of 2011 I placed 1st Overall in the Texas Fall Cup Series and was also the Women's Points Leader in a Local Road Criterium Series. This year I have upgraded my license Internationally to Pro and have raced my first National Pro race. It was awesome!
My goal for 2012 is to seek sponsorships and increase my rank on the national level by following the Pro XCT, and for Carlos to place Top 3 Overall in Texas as a Cat 1. As pro-amateur racers we can use all the help that we can get and will continue working towards riding my bike for a living!
