No excuses! My name is John Blewis, and this is my own personal success story. Just a few years ago in late 2008 and early 2009, I pretty much hit rock bottom. I was killing my body daily with alcohol, smoking, overeating, no exercise and suffered from severe depression. I finally got sick and tired of being that way. I have two young daughters and a wife that were watching my health crumble and living a life of lies to make myself feel better. That is all I wanted, “I wanted to feel better” about myself. For years, I spent numerous hours feeling sorry for myself and saying I was going to do something about it, but lacked the motivation to stay on track. I had no plan, no drive, no energy, and no desire to even think of working out or eating better.
In May of 2009 everything changed. I had been working in the Bahamas on a project and would go out every morning and walk on the dock and think about my life while I had some coffee. It hit me finally that I did not have to live this way. The only way I could change the way I feel is by changing my lifestyle completely. It was one of the best decisions I made in my life, and probably saved my life too.
I decided that I was going to be the person my family will be proud of. So, I made the commitment to myself and family that I was going to change. People looked at me and said many things to me that still motivate me now:
“Yeah right, you? John, you will do it for a little bit and like everyone else you’ll quit and then start enjoying life again!”
“What are you going to be some kind of health freak?”
“We all die anyways so who cares about working out. Want a beer?”
“This health “thing” is really taking over your life. Don’t you like to have fun?”
“You are going to run a Marathon? Dude you will die before a couple miles!”
You get the idea. Many negative comments are said to keep me down instead of motivating me to go for it. At that time, I made the decision to change my life I weighed in at 239 lbs. I started to eat better, and working out and running became a staple in my life. I have since dedicated the rest of my life to fitness; including the fitness of others, to help them achieve their goals. I see life as an opportunity to do great things now instead of a “daily grind” like many others may think. Let’s work together by improving our fitness and spread it to others.
