Q&A - Competition

How did you get started?

I was 12 years old (in 1987) and a friend of mine got a mountain bike. Looked like fun so I got one too and we rode around any trails we could find in Bakersfield. We took a few trips to Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo to ride. Next thing you know we're going up to Mammoth for the 1987 World Mountain Bike Championships. That was my first race. I did a few more over the next couple of years. Once high school started I sort of stopped riding regularly. After college I started up again and this past year I started racing again.

List your competitive highlights:

1989 Norba World Championships 2nd place kamikaze Downhill -------------------------------- 2009 Rim Nordic Stage Race Champion --------------------------------------------------------------- 2009 US Cup Unification Champion ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2009 SoCal XC Series 4th ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2009 SoCal Super D Series 2nd ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2009 State Championship XC race 2nd

What are you planning for next season?

For 2010 I plan to race cat 2 and be competitive in every race. I'll race the US Cup series and the Team Big Bear series. I'll also mix in Southridge, Rim Nordic, and any other local races I can find. Ultimately this year, I'd like to race the cat 2 National Championship in Granby, CO. At that point, if I feel like my season's been successful I'll move up to cat 1. I'm also planning on racing Sea Otter on the tandem with my fiancee.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

Raced in 53 races in 2009 and I have to say I had fun in at least 50 of them. I feel like my biggest accomplishment though was starting the season off as a beginner (cat 3), and being somewhat in awe of how good cat 1 and 2 riders were, then being able to be a competitive cat 2 rider by mid-season.
