At the age of 21, Austin Nettleton is ahead of where he should be in all aspects of life. Austin is a senior at Texas Tech University. Austin is getting his degree in Public Relations to pursue a career in Action Sports PR.
Austin Nettleton is from the small northeast Texas town of Queen City, Texas. It's a town of about 1,000. Austin graduated #13 out of a class of 72 in 2010 as part of a three way tie between him and his best friends, which made up the 11-13 spots. Austin then moved to Lubbock, Texas to attend Texas Tech University. It wasn't until August 2012 when Austin's life changed when he joined the Texas Tech Ski and Snowboard (club, at the time)....
Austin's love for all things action sports, especially snowboarding, spills into every aspect of his life. He loves action sports as much as he does his parents and his friends.
Austin's dream is to, one day, become a professional snowboardcross racer and compete in the X Games, FIS/TTR World Snowboard Tour, and, hopefully, represent the U.S.A in the Winter Olympics. Austin has always been a dreamer, but one who has walked the walked.
Austin's snowboard career really exploded at the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013. Austin got his first sponsorship in October of 2012 with GoPro. From there, things took off. Gaining sponsorships with SPY+ Optic, Indo Board Balance Trainer, Virus Action Sports Performance, and, finally, gaining a sponsorship with his absolute favorite company: Monster Energy.
After overcoming so much, from being diagnosed with clinical depression/anxiety/ADHD, to rebuilding his GPA from a 1.8 to a 2.8 in a time-span of about a year, and the loss of many friends, Austin has really shown that there is hope and things DO get better.
Austin's competitive career is just beginning. Austin has taken his first major steps toward his dream of becoming a professional boardercross racer by being accepted to race in the USASA Southern Freeride Series Boardercross Regionals at Taos Ski Valley on March 9 through March 10. Austin was also invited as a wild-card to compete in the Salomon Extreme Freeride Championships/Freeride World Qualifiers.
Austin came in second place at the USASA Southern Freeride Series boardercross regionals, earning him a spot in the USASA National Championships.
Austin finished the 2013 USASA competition season at 25th place out of 87 boardercross riders in his age group. Considering that this was his first year ever competing, this was a HUGE accomplishment for him.
In 2014, Austin plans on competing in Giant Slalaom and Slalom, alongside boardercross, in the USASA. Austin is also helping to establish a team at Texas Tech University to compete in the United States Collegiate Ski/Snowboard Association.
Austin has came such a long way, especially coming from a super small town in the woods of east Texas to becoming sponsored and proving to everyone that location isn't an excuse for chasing what you want.
Austin is going to show the snowboarding world that there is some serious snowboarding talent in the good ol' Texas.
