Q&A - Personal

What inspires you to compete?

The unknown. I am always eager to see how far I can go and then when I go past what I know I'm capable of, it's very exciting. I do all I can and then ask God to do a bit more! I'm also inspired by the fact that I have kids who look up to me. I am a teacher and have many students who know I race, this compells me to do my best. My own children and my oldest son is a big source of inspiration. I give him all my medals when I'm finished. My dad also inspires me since he comes to all my races.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

I did a race in a small town a few years back and it was one one of the hardest races I've done. It was a 15k with 280 steps up a sand dune at mile 4. I was fighting for a top ten spot and barely edged out 10th for 9th place. In order to get it though I had to go beyond pain and I ended up puking all over the finish. A local newscaster (Tom Vanhow)was there to give live commentary of my action.

Why do you like this sport?

I love the variety and I love the endurance element. I was never really coordinated or particurly good at ball sports, so I find these shortcomings don't matter as much in triathlon. I can just swim, bike and run without having to get a ball in a net or hoop. I also love the people that race, I have a great group of friends that push me.

Some Personal Information About Me:

I am 32 years old, birthday in May. I am an elementary school teacher. I am a mural painter. I love to throw pottery on the wheel. I enjoyed theater in college and did some shows after college. I always wished I could be a musician but can't play any instruments. I believe this quote ultimately sums it up, look up Nehemiah 8:9-12. "The Joy is the Lord is my strength"

Describe your style...

My wife determines my style for the most part. I like casual, shirts untucked and sandals. I have curly hair so if it's humid you'll see me in a hat.
