In December of 1996 I fell from a third story building in San Francisco and landed on the street below. I spent several days in the ICU in the trauma center of SF General Hospital intubated with a Glascow Coma scale of 8. I sustained multiple injuries including a compound left femoral shaft fracture, left femoral neck fracture, a significantly displaced subacute left scaphoid fracture, a right metacarpal fracture, a fractured jaw and mandible, multiple skull fractures, fractured left temporal bone/temporal lobe damage, severe head trauma/traumatic brain injury, traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula, ruptured ear drum which left me with hearing loss in my right ear, indirect orbital floor fracture (eye socket blowout fracture), left 6th cranial nerve damage, lower 7th cranial nerve damage, left 11th cranial nerve damage, brachial plexus injury, paresthesia and other subsequent injuries that have arisen due to the initial injuries I sustained when my body hit the ground.
I spent several months in the hospital and then in a wheelchair. Because of my traumatic brain injury I was told that I would never walk without assistance again. It took time and lots of determination but I learned how to walk again, I also learned how to talk again and perform simple tasks such as feeding myself and tying my shoes. For a long time I had double vision. My body was pieced back together with a lot of metal rods and pins, I basically have prosthetics but on the inside of my body. My entire left leg is a long titanium rod that goes through my entire femur and is secured to my hip with several screws and my knee with several screws. My right tibia is the same, as is my left shoulder and left wrist. I still have partial paralysis and nerve damage throughout my extremities.
In 2011, I trained for my first 1/2 marathon, my goal was just to finish. It was such an empowering experience for me that I decided to do another one, then another, then another one :) Then in 2012, I was told my youngest son was intellectually disabled, that he would never learn how to read or write, he would never have a normal life and I would have to be his caretaker for the rest of my life. I am constantly being told what he can't or will never be able to do and that reminded me of when I was told I would never walk again. So I made it my mission to show him that he can do anything he wants, I am using myself as the example.
This past summer I ran the Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon, I did it in a time of 6:40:20. I have in total run six 1/2 marathons. On September 29th I am competing in the Ironman 70.3 Augusta, in October I will be running the SF Nike Womens Marathon.
I want to be an inspiration to others who have sustained a traumatic injury or who have a disability to never give-up, you can achieve whatever it is you put your heart and soul into.
I also follow a 100% plant-based diet.
I get it done. No matter how long it takes me...I don't quit until I get it done.
