2010 S.O.R.P. Fast Track Quad Racing Series

Round 1 @ Splendora MX Park

Round 1 of the S.O.R.P. Fast Track Quad Racing Series kicked off at Splendora MX in Splendora, Texas practice day Saturday 02/13/2010. Lots of rain and cold weather leading into the weekend had us all a little concerned. Not to mention a couple of the riders were pretty sick. With that said practice went off without a hitch. No injuries and no broken bikes. It was exciting to have the team back together after a long off season. Unfortunately we were short a bike, Kyle #390 due to bad weather, his bike was not ready for round 1. Clint’s bike was limping around the track with last years rear shock trying to work at the same level of performance as his new long travel Fox/Houser front end. Kristopher #333 was pretty sick and caught up in some on going maintenance with fellow rider Brandon Clark #7 that he did not get any practice in on Saturday. Hart #14 was able to get in some good practice and looked top notch for round 1. Clint #55 looked good during practice with some small adjustments to his rear suspension the bike seamed to handle better every run. Kyle #390 sharing a bike with Kris #333 looked good in practice for riding an unfamiliar bike. Paul #53 for lack of any ride time prior to round 1 decided it would not be a good plan to jump right in at this point, he has some time before round 2 to get him self mentally and physically prepared. After practice it was good company and good food hanging out with each other playing some cards and just getting stuff set for race day.
Sunday morning came pretty quick after going to bed, it was chilly but not to cold and very foggy. The call for riders meeting rang through the loud speaker as a sign that things were about to get kicked off. The riders meeting was short nothing out of the ordinary. Kris #333 and Cling #55 had 1st practice, the track was very deep and sticky but not to bad and allowed for some good line choices for the race and to get a feel for the faces of the jumps. Hart #14 was second up, the track seemed to improve pretty fast, Hart felt comfortable and looked very fast. Kyle #390 was last up the track was in much better shape by now and Kyle was able to get in some good practice, he really was working on his technique and trying to get more comfortable on the bike.
Practice is over and it is time to get ready for the real deal. The race order was put out and we all start preparing for Moto #1. With only 11 classes on the roster we knew it was going to go pretty quick. Hart #14 is second class (Youth) at the gate. He has learned so much it is nice to watch him pull up to the gate and he knows right where he wants and needs to be on the line to ensure a good hole shot. I don’t really have to tell him anymore, even though we still exchange looks to ensure we are on the same page, 95% of time we are, it makes the whole experience pretty cool. The gate drops for Moto #1, Hart rockets out the gate for the whole shop and continues to extend his lead through the 4 lap Moto to take 1st place. Moto #1 of Round 1 in the books and it was a very convincing first Moto for 2010 sending a strong message that he is not playing around. Next to the gate is Brandon #7 (Open B) although not part of Team B.R.A.T. he was riding the teams TRX450r bike due to mechanical issues with his own bike. Brandon got a pretty good spot on the gate. The gate dropped and he rockets out for the hole shot. Unfamiliar with the bike he tires quickly and falls to a 4th place finish. Now it is Clint #55 (Open Quad) who is sitting at the gate. He has a pretty good spot on the gate, the gate drops, but Clint has been struggling a bit with hole shots as he does this time as well. Clint had just moved up to the Open Quad Class from the Open C Class. He rode hard to keep his 4th place position and not let the riders in front oh him pull away. He finished Moto #1 in 4th place. Next to the gate is Kris #333 (Over 30 Competitive), even though he is sick and not really feeling like being on the line, there he is. It has been a while since he has raced and now is the time to get back to it. Danno (the team photographer) takes some shots and some of the team members jump in for a group picture as to mark the moments’ importance. Time to go, the gate drops and Kris rocketed out of the gate taking the hole shot and the lead. Things are looking good to start but second lap around something is wrong. A flat tire puts Kris back to 7th place over all. Kris knowing that Kyle #390 (Pro-Am) is only two classes behind him has to ensure that he gets back to the truck to get the bike ready for Kyle who will be running the same bike today. He gets it back quickly and team members are waiting there to lend a hand, knowing the situation. Ok the bike is fixed quickly no real damage just popped the tire from the bead. Kyle is on the bike and on his way to the gate. He gets to the gate not a bad spot but not a real good spot either. He is excited and nervous all at the same time. Kyle has just moved up to the Pro-Am class and today the gates’ lined with 13 of some very fast riders. Kris is talking to Kyle telling him to calm him self down and control his breathing and lower his heart rate. Trying to help him focus on the race at hand and his technique so he can pick good lines and keep his mind on what he needs to do in order to perform. The gate drops and Kyle comes out of the gate a little slow, some contact is made and Kyle backs off the throttle a bit. Not a good start as he tracks left to the inside corner to make up a couple of spots. Kyle makes a couple of passes in the next three turns and is looking pretty good. He quickly tired and by mid second lap he is showing signs of fatigue. The riders that he had passed earlier are now pressuring him for position. Unable to hold off the attacks Kyle ends up back of the pack in 13th place by the end of the race wrapping up Moto #1. A short intermission will give people time to gather up and prepare for Moto #2.
Moto #2 started out very similar to Moto #1, Hart (Youth Class) has gate pick, rocketed of the line for the hole shot and the lead. He maintains the lead for 4 laps in Hart fashion for the win and 1st overall on the day. Brandon (Open B Class) Lines up on the gate in a better spot than Moto #1, the gate drops and Brandon has a little trouble getting out fast enough to secure the hole shot, he finished the race 4th over all. Clint lines up on the gate for Moto #2 (Open Quad Class), also in a better spot than he had in Moto #1. The gate drops and Clint shoots out with his competitors and they are running neck and neck. It is up for grabs as the bikes start touching, Clint feels the pressure and is uncomfortable, so he backs off the throttle dropping back to 3rd place. A good hole shot just lacks the experience need to be able to hang in and push through that type of situation. Clint holds his 3rd spot position again maintaining the pace of the riders in front of him to finish 3rd over all. Kris makes a decision to not race Moto #2 because he was not feeling very well and he was concerned that the bike may get damaged and take Kyle out of the race also. Last rider of the day Kyle will line up again on the gate for Moto #2 (Pro-Am Class). He has a horrible gate pick from running 13th in Moto #1 so he already has his work cut out for him. The gate drops and Kyle is on it, even from the outside Kyle rocketed out in front over the other riders. He came very close to get the hole shot, but the 2 bikes all the way to the inside corner force Kyle out a bit more than he wants. Still a very good hole shot for Kyle. Unfortunately there was also one very wet spot and Kyle got plastered with the mud and can’t see for the next turn. Kyle slows down enough to wipe his goggles before he can get back on the gas, unfortunately that little bit is all it took for the other riders to make the passes and leave Kyle in the back. Kyle ran a much better race for Moto #2 you could tell that he was thinking about the race. He paced well with the majority of the pack and finished 11th in Moto #2 for a 13th place over all on the day.
That wrapped up Round 1 for S.O.R.P. and the start of the 2010 racing season. We look forward to the upcoming races. All bikes and riders should be ready for the Round 2 at Cycle Ranch in Floresville, Texas. The team shirts should be ready along with bike decals and # plates. There is plenty to do in order to get ready for the next race and ensure that we are more prepared. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for the play by play for Bushen Racing in 2010.

  Dear Kris and Bushen Racing,
I just wanted to thank you for everything this 2008 season.
Thank you for rebuilding my bike at the start of the season.
Thank you and your sons for changing my broken frame out in mid season.
I couldn't have competed or completed all the rounds with out your endless hours of work on my bike. You never complained to my Dad and I when I broke something on the bike, instead you focused on fixing it as fast as you could. My Dad and I had allot of fun this 2008 season, you all are fun to hang out with and gave me much needed advise during practices and race weekends, and it helps allot that your wife "Faith" is cool and a good cook! You know how to push me just enough to be the best I can be. Thank you for inviting me back for the 2009 season and getting my motor rebuilt by Greg at cycleworksracing.net to a 350, gusseting my frame from scratch and power coating it for the Sport Quad class. I will do my very best for Bushen Racing next year and look forward to racing for Bushen Racing Team in the 2009 season.
Thanks, Hart Walker #14 aka - "Hartomatic"
